Rice Cake War
October 8, 2014
THIS unique tradition is held at Kapal village, Mengwi, Badung. Though being a century-old tradition, it remains to be maintained by residents. They gather in front of the village temple where prayers and blessings take place on the full moon in October. In general, residents are divided into two groups armed with a basket of rice cake called tipat bantal.
Philosophically, the event signifies a blessing and prosperity for the whole agrarian village. After the battles, the remainders are spread over their rice fields. The rice cakes or tipat serves as purusha (male), while bantal or pillow serves as pradhana (female). Encounter of both elements brings forth a life.
